Another user took to Twitter to express how ‘disappointed’ he was in her decision to take off the headscarf. “As someone who supported you and followed you for years, I must say I am disappointed. Your decision to take off your headscarf sends a wrong message to our youth,” he said.
While the decision to take off the headscarf was entirely Tuğçe’s own, she received this vitriol from the religiously fundamentalist among the Turks. There is no denying that Turkey is a more secular country today than it was centuries ago, but the society is still split between conservatives and progressives.
In the past few years, a significant number of Turkish women have been taking off their headscarves. A study conducted in 2019 found that more young Turkish women were choosing to take off the headscarf and embrace modernity.
This is a reflection of Turkey’s changing society, which is becoming more globalised, liberal, and progressive. Despite this progress, conservative tendencies still exist, and when people’s individual choices do not conform to the traditional code of conduct, they often face harsh criticism from conservative elements.
In recent years, Turkey has seen a rise in Islamisation, which has led to an increase in support for more conservative values. This shift in values has led to some people losing faith in Turkey’s Kemalist, republicanism and advocating for strict adherence to Islamic principles.
The phenomenon of some Turkish women taking off their headscarves indicates that the traditional values are losing their grip on the society, with modernity and globalisation becoming more influential. However, the negative comments on Tuğçe Tayfur’s decision shows that there is still a long way to go before the society can learn to accept individual choices and tolerance in all its aspects.
