As we approach the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world look forward to observing this month with fasting, prayers, and charity. But what about Muslims who are in space, such as astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS)? How do they observe Ramadan?
In 2021, two Muslim astronauts, Hazzaa AlMansoori from the United Arab Emirates and Sultan AlNeyadi from the Emirati astronaut corps, made history by observing Ramadan in space. They were part of the crew of the ISS and spent the month of Ramadan on board.
To celebrate the end of Ramadan, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which is also known as Ramazan Bayramı in Turkish. This is a time for celebration with family and friends, as well as giving and receiving gifts and eating traditional foods.
But how do you celebrate Eid in space? The two astronauts marked the occasion with a special space-themed greeting where they wished people on Earth a happy Eid. They also shared photos and videos from the ISS with the hashtag #EidMubarak.
Despite being in space, they were able to enjoy traditional Eid foods and received a special delivery of Islamic prayer books, which they used to continue their religious observances. They were also able to communicate with loved ones on Earth using video calls, which helped them to feel closer to home during this important time.
Observing Ramadan and celebrating Eid in space may be a new experience, but it highlights the diversity of the Muslim community and the importance of adapting to new situations. This historic event is a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, we can still celebrate our religious traditions and come together to celebrate and give thanks.
In conclusion, the celebration of Ramazan Bayramı in space by Hazzaa AlMansoori and Sultan AlNeyadi has been a landmark event for Muslims around the world. It has shown that despite being in space, Muslims can still enjoy and observe their religious traditions. This event has also shown that diversity within the Muslim community should be celebrated and that Muslims can adapt to new situations while still maintaining their faith. The celebration of Ramazan Bayramı in space will long be remembered as a moment of unity and celebration among Muslims worldwide.
